The Magic of Literacy
October 21, 2018 @ 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm
“Mr. and Mrs. Dursley, of number four, Privet Drive, were proud to say that they were perfectly normal, thank you very much. They were the last people you’d expect to be involved in anything strange or mysterious, because they just didn’t hold with such nonsense…”
And so began the first chapter of one of the most beloved books in history: Harry Potter and The Sorcerer’s Stone by J.K. Rowling. The book was released twenty years ago, and to honor our favorite boy wizard and the joy he’s brought to us all over the past two decades, we thought it only right that we kick off our MSJ initiative with a party celebrating The Magic of Literacy.
Join us at The Chattanooga Choo Choo for a magical, family-friendly, and FREE event for the community! There will be costumed characters and photo ops, a decorated train, themed treats, a sorting hat scavenger hunt, and all sorts of magical fun. Our goal for this event is not only to enjoy the wizarding world as Muggles, but also to encourage literacy by handing out free copies of Harry Potter and The Sorcerer’s Stone to ONE HUNDRED area children.
We all know how important reading is, but we also know that access to literature can sometimes be a barrier for children who long to escape into the pages of a book. That is why we at MSJ have created the Classroom Library Project. We are partnering with Opportunity Zone schools in Hamilton County to create libraries in the classrooms of interested schools. Our goal for 2019 is to go into at least 5 classrooms over a weekend and transform a corner of their space into an inviting, well-stocked, diverse library their students can enjoy for years to come. We already have interested schools across the county, but our first stop will be at Woodmore Elementary this fall.
We hope you will bring your family and friends to Platform 9 3/4 at The Chattanooga Choo Choo to encourage the magic of literacy in our community.
