The Magic of Literacy: A History

In 2018, the Chattanooga Moms for Social Justice held the first annual "Magic of Literacy" event in Chattanooga, Tennessee. With the help of donations, volunteers, and a lot of magic, they were able to transform the historic Chattanooga Choo Choo into Platform 9 3/4 for one bewitching evening.

The Magic of Literacy is MSJ's free, family-friendly event for the Chattanooga community. With costumed characters, photo opportunities, magical creatures, spectacular performances, tantalizing treats, local vendors, "classes" for little witches & wizards, and so much more, The Magic of Literacy is an event for all ages.

The goal of The Magic of Literacy is encouraging a love of reading by giving away over a hundred copies of the first and second books in the Harry Potter series to local kids—for free.

At The Magic of Literacy 2018, MSJ had:

  • 1,000+ attendees

  • 100+ volunteers

  • 100+ free books given to local kids

  • 10+ family-friendly activities

  • 40+ community partners

  • 40k+ Facebook event reach

  • 2,000+ Facebook event responses
