Our Work

Moms for Social Justice continues to contribute to the community through projects, workshops, volunteer partnerships, and coalition building.

The Classroom Library Project

In August 2018, Chattanooga Moms for Social Justice announced an initiative: The Classroom Library Project. With the goal of encouraging and promoting literacy throughout Hamilton County schools and homes, MSJ planned to fund, install, and stock diverse libraries in at least one classroom per each of the 12 Opportunity Zone Schools in Hamilton County.

The objective of The Classroom Library Project was for the libraries to include relevant and recently published works of children’s literature and be representative of the populations of children who utilize them—teaching them more about the world and people around them and encouraging a love of reading.

As of April 2022, MSJ has successfully installed 17 libraries, exceeding the initial goal of 12 libraries.

The Magic of Literacy

Though now shut down by COVID, our Magic of Literacy event was an entirely free experience to our community that brought reading to life. Attended by thousands, Magic of Literacy featured fire dancers, cosplayers, crafters, and local businesses at the Chattanooga Choo Choo.

Through the generosity of our supporters, we were overjoyed to be able to distribute hundreds of brand new books to the children in attendance.

Civic Engagement

MSJ’s mission is a marriage of passion and policy. Our Let Freedom Read rally sent a clear message to local legislators that we would not let the government restrict access to literature without a fight. We’ve attended and helped organize numerous protests and rallies to let our community know that we would continue to fight for a more equitable future.

MSJ works with policy makers to make legislation that positively impacts all, rallies the community to attend local government meetings and committee sessions, and shares the latest happenings in the government. We also support and endorse candidates and elected officials that we know will work toward making our communities a more equitable place for all.

Partnerships

We lean on our community partners to ensure we are helping where it is most needed. From volunteering at local events, collecting donations, and helping to run events, we provide helping hands and hearts. MSJ members are always ready to roll up their sleeves with humility and respect to the communities they are assisting.

Workshops

From teen menstruation to confronting discrimination, MSJ has run a free workshops to educate and empower our community.

Social Hours

Expanding comradery and trust is an important part of coalition building. MSJ has facilitated fun social justice social hours so that our community can celebrate and reflect.

Online Community

To keep us all connected and informed, MSJ maintains an facebook community group. Sharing ideas, articles, and calls to action is a core part of our mission.
